it’s never too late, it’s never too soon…
… to do the right thing; to make someone else feel important; to help someone who needs it, or ask for help when you need it.
try something simple: smile and say thank you to the person bagging your groceries. let someone else go before you at a traffic intersection. compliment someone at work or at home for their efforts.
it’s never too late, or too soon, to do things like these; to slow down the pace of our daily lives, and find appreciation for the small, subtle aspects of life that otherwise get lost in the bills, the shopping, the appointments, and so on.
those things aren’t life. living is more than day-to-day existence. it’s the experiences we create and share with one another. sometimes we feel good about the experiences in our lives, while other times, we feel bad.
but, no matter how bad it feels, it’s never too late, or too soon, to stop letting ourselves be bystanders in our own lives. each of us can attempt to make things better; everyone, everyday, everywhere has the chance to create and share good experiences with someone else.
right now, many people in the world are gearing up for a big day. what if that day, and everything it’s supposed to mean, lasted as long as a year?

yearlongnight…
maybe yearlongday isn’t destined for success.
five years ago, things were different. songwriting was an outlet for ideas and emotions. i’d never performed in front of an audience. ’yearlongday’ wasn’t even in my vocabulary.
today, songwriting is a contest, performance is a measure of talent, and i can’t seem to make ‘yearlongday’ a household word.
i’m starting to wonder if there’s been a benefit, dare i say a reward, to these changes. performing in front of audiences in pittsburgh, baltimore, philadelphia, delaware, and new jersey hasn’t brought me closer to my goal than practicing alone in my home studio. i’ve written over 200 songs, but can anyone name more than a handful, and who can sing along to them? who looks for our next gig, or buys yearlongday merch? does anyone even search us online?
for now, our ‘moment in the sun’ looks like 2008-09; leah and i had arrived at a general identity for yearlongday; a recognizable sound, image, and personality that listeners could associate with us. with only modest press (strummer radio), we soon played reputable venues like the tin angel and the world cafe. we created an assortment of unique t-shirts, produced our debut cd, best excuses, and felt poised for an upward rise to success of one degree or another.
yet, for all of the time and effort it took getting to that point, we’re now somewhere we’ve already been before… nowhere. we’ve stepped backwards, and our ’moment in the sun’ is apparently over. with new songs and albums forthcoming, and no shows booked so far this year, it feels like our winter hiatus hasn’t ended as we continue to remain in darkness.
eleven…
we’re into the second month of our new online home. i’m getting comfortable with the surroundings, but noticed a trend of inverse correlation… the bigger our splash into an endeavor, the smaller our resulting waves. perhaps a few examples to illustrate?
two of the three albums we promised to release this year are in the hands of our fans (restoring utopia and modern moments)… yawn.
an exciting new website that brings together all of the things you want from yearlongday in one convenient location… crickets.
ever wonder how our music develops from idea to studio recording? you can hear the process unfold on our myspace profile and get free merch… or not.
in either case, it looks like there will be plenty of spam for me to read in the next eleven months.

now isn’t new enough…
… but now will have to do, because that’s all we’ve got.
now… yearlongday has a new website.
now… we’ll learn if it’s more important to be in with the right people, or right with the in people.
now… i feel like this blog should be in a van halen song.
love on ya!

spring…
reawakening.
returning.
rebirth.
yearlongday is thawing its winter frost, and preparing for a new musical season in the sun. in fact, i am convinced that this will be our best year so far. not only did i insist that yearlongday would do things differently in 2010, i also promised at least three albums this year.
what will we do differently in 2010? for starters, expect a new website soon with everything you get from us now, plus more!
where are the three albums? utopia is in my car, waiting until i decide the time is right to distribute copies. a few people already have advance mixdowns, but you can hear some of the tracks on our myspace profile. modern moments is sitting beside my computer, waiting for me to put the finishing touches on the artwork. humans: abridged is still in the restoration lab, and will not be ready until later this year.
forget about your scarves and mittens… you won’t need them where we’re going!
love on ya!
